About the Event
In chapter three of “How will You Measure Your Life?”, Clayton Christensen explains that options for both business and life strategy should spring from two different sources. The first source, the Deliberate Strategy, is usually based on anticipated opportunities, the one that we can foresee and choose to pursue.
The second source of options for strategy is unanticipated. It’s something you discover. It presents itself as a “cocktail of problems and opportunities that emerges while you are trying to implement the deliberate plan for strategy you have decided upon”. This is called the Emergent Strategy.
The Deep Dive
According to Clayton, “when you put in place a plan focused on anticipated opportunities, you are pursuing a deliberate strategy”. However, companies don’t succeed by simply seeking to follow a strategy - whether deliberate or emergent.
During our next session of “By The Good Book”, we would explore how companies successfully applied these theories to achieve strategic success, how Clayton adapted them to his personal career, and finally what process should you follow to determine if a strategic path is right for you?
